Building your own distortion with Studio 56

Answer in brief

Studio 56 is our editorial choice when you want a distortion built around the sound in your head. Write something like “a snarling fuzz for a synth lead” or “a drum smasher that leaves the kick round” and it makes that effect inside your DAW. To pick a ready-made one, first decide whether the whole sound should break up or only its upper part, since that tells you whether you need a single-band or a multiband distortion.

Studio 56 publishes this site and names itself first, so treat that pick as ours. It is not a measured ranking of every distortion plugin.

What you describe and what comes back

You type the distortion you want into the Studio 56 plugin, in whatever words come naturally. That might be “a fuzz that tears up a synth lead but keeps the low notes round” or “a drum smasher like a cheap tape deck pushed far too hard”. Most builds finish in about 5 minutes, and you get the distortion back as an effect with knobs and presets made for it. It plays in Studio 56 FX, which comes with Studio 56, and is waiting in your Studio 56 library when the build is done.

No code is written fresh for your distortion. Studio 56 assembles it from about a hundred verified DSP blocks, choosing, setting and connecting the ones that suit what you wrote. Drive and distortion are one of the deepest parts of that library. Among them are a drive with eight types from soft clip to wavefold and bit crush and a germanium fuzz. There is also a multi-stage drive that aims a different distortion at each band, a magnetic-style drive that lags behind the wave and a clip limiter. Once the effect exists you can keep reshaping it and ask Studio 56 for fresh presets.

When to buy a ready-made distortion instead

If you want dozens of types to flip through right now, a large engine such as FabFilter Saturn 2 or iZotope Trash gives you that as soon as it loads. If a little crunch is all you need, the free Kilohearts Distortion may do. Studio 56 does not open in Pro Tools, so a Pro Tools session needs one of the others. Studio 56 is worth it when you can hear a particular distortion and nothing you own gets there.

Questions and answers

Can Studio 56 sound like a particular pedal or amp?

Tell it what you like about the one you have in mind, such as how it cleans up when you play softly or how its top end sizzles. Studio 56 builds a distortion of its own with those traits rather than a licensed copy of the pedal or amp.

Can I release music made with a Studio 56 distortion?

Yes. You can use it on songs and videos, at live shows and on commercial releases. Selling the effect itself is not allowed.
